The Laguna Madre Nature Trail was the forerunner of what is now the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center Boardwalk. The Boardwalk contains informative signs about dune systems and bird species that frequent the area. Visitors to this Boardwalk can observe many birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Special landscaping efforts have been developed specifically designed to attract birds to the area. Thanks to the efforts of the South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation, the original 1,500 feet of boardwalk now contains almost a mile of opportunities for observation and outdoor enjoyment.
The boardwalk is open sunrise to sunset. Admission is $5, which includes admission to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. There are discounts available. The main entrance to the boardwalk is at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, 6801 Padre Boulevard. You can also enter on the south side of the South Padre Island Convention Center, located at 7355 Padre Boulevard. You can also marvel at Whaling Wall #53, painted on the convention centre by noted artist Wyland.
